9A Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Opportunity: Help encourage healthier lifestyle options
The Who: Any one who might suffer from health issues or weight issues.
The What: The unhealthy lifestyle society has encouraged has caused an increase in diseases. Society has dismissed health issues related to unhealthy food, thus making fast food an optimal selection for consumers. It is easy for consumers to turn a blind eye to what they are consuming because fast food is affordable, convenient, and effortless. The world is becoming lazy and no one is stopping this from happening, it’s tragic.
The why: Increased consumption of pesticides and chemically grown/altered foods. Increased gap in knowledge, we don’t know what we are consuming. There has also been a decline in physical activity and an acceptance of the lack there of. Instead of hanging outside with friends or playing sports, kids are now being raised inside with computers.
Testing The Who: Who else has this need?
-Older people who lack the ability to cook or have an active lifestyle
-Parents and schools
-college students with a busy lifestyle
-Family members of the affected people
Testing the what: What boundaries exist for this need?
-People who have a low income
-people who have to work multiple jobs to support their family and lack the time to commit
-social acceptance of unhealthy foods may prove to be an issue
Testing the Why:
-Poor regulations on food
-acceptance of unhealthy food in our communities \
-poor educational information/ not a lot of talk about what we are consuming as a population.
-lack of ability to comprehend the consequences
-Increasing cost of living which causes people to need to work multiple jobs
Inside the Boundary:
Who is currently existing within the boundary?
-Uneducated individuals
-students
-Individuals impacted by health issues
What is the need?
-develop educational opportunities for people
-promotion of healthier foods
-promotion of physical activities
Why are me facing this need?
-There is a lack of education which is making it difficult for people to understand what their consuming. Society has put a big OK stamp next to laziness and unhealthy lifestyle.
-Women with weight issues
-people actively trying to gain muscle and find the right foods for muscle development.
Outside of the boundary:
-students that already eat healthy
-vegans
-vegetarians
-people who are unwilling to learn
-People who support societies fads
Why?
-there are individuals who were raised to eat at home and might be exposed to sports. Typically athletes already know this need exists and they try.
Interviews:
Most of the people I interviewed were from my gym and had a lot of insight to provide.
The first two people, Amy and John, use supplements and vitamins and are really big on Non-GMO products. Everything they consume is vegan and relatively healthy. Amy is more lenient with her diet but knows very clearly what she should and should not consume. For this situation, Amy and John would both be outside the boundary because the need doesn’t exist for them.
I interviewed my cousin who has two small children, one is 3 and the other is 2. My cousin is a single mom with no education and a full time job. Her income is that of the lower class and she has a lot of difficulties with keeping healthy food in the house. Usually, she has the necessary staples (milk, break, eggs, orange juice, etc...) for her and the kids, however, she ends up buying cereal, snacks, frozen pizzas and fast food. She is constantly busy and on the move so fast clean-up free meals are her go to. My cousin would be an example of someone who is within the boundary and would benefit from nutritional knowledge and guidance.
The last person I interviewed works with me at Apple, her name is Tori. Aside from working at Apple part time she also attends University of Georgia as a sophomore. She has always been over weight and has fought really hard to try and maintain a healthy weight. Her goal is to lose 50 LBs and go back to a healthy lifestyle. Tori would also benefit from guidance and support, which is why she is included in the boundary.
After conducting the interviews I was able to gain a better understanding on what the need was. I think its guidance and support as everyone has hit on that topic briefly. The people I interviewed all varied in reason but shared the same aspirations: health. For the two who were outside of the boundary, they exist there because they’ve already been exposed to that lifestyle. They would be great ambassadors for the company but do not benefit from the product being offered.
Hey Tara,
ReplyDeleteI feel like you definitely put a lot of thought into this post. I feel like this is also a very intriguing opportunity. There are lots of people with health issues in the U.S. and hence the "who" for this hypothesis is quite big and you can do very well with this. The interviews seemed to be very insightful and it seems like you highlighted candidates who would be ideal for the guidance and support from the service you are describing above.
